Canelones House

CANELONES, URUGUAY

The design sought to create a home that responds to both the region’s natural beauty and the desire for contemporary, minimalist living. Located in the tranquil countryside, surrounded by rolling hills the house was envisioned as a serene retreat that embraces the natural landscape while offering all the comforts of modern architecture. The challenge was to design a home that not only integrates seamlessly with its rural setting but also stands as a bold architectural statement in concrete—an expression of permanence, simplicity, and craftsmanship.

Site & Context: The site is located just outside of the bustling city of Montevideo, in Canelones, a region known for its vineyards, agricultural land, and sprawling, open views.

The house is designed to be unobtrusive in the landscape, nestled into the topography with a low-profile, long horizontal form. I embraced the simplicity of the site, allowing the house to be a quiet presence in its natural surroundings while providing its inhabitants with expansive views and a direct connection to nature.

Exterior Design: The design of the exterior is dominated by the use of raw, exposed concrete—an intentional choice that reflects both modernity and timelessness. Concrete was chosen not only for its durability and aesthetic appeal but also for its ability to provide thermal mass, helping to regulate the home’s internal temperature in a region that experiences both hot summers and cooler winters.
